Around 1168 wagoners on their way towards Prague happened to discover a piece of silver ore on the rutted road. After the finding, the creation of a mining settlement soon began. The message Berg frey (Mountains free), eventually led to the origin of the later mining town, Freiberg.
Margrave Otto of Meissen had a large financial interest in the revival of the mining industry, therefore he supported the city.

Great history and remarkable stories. Popular names and rare treasures. Work, art and science – Freiberg has been influenced by many developments.

Freiberg is a traditional university town. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg was founded in 1765 by Prince Regent Xaver – to save the
location permanently with know-how. Geology, material, energy and environment are the important departments of the research.
